Everything you need to know for
your first DWI class

Whether you are an absolute beginner looking to start your dance journey or a seasoned mover reigniting your passion, we know that stepping into a new dance studio might come with some questions. That’s why we created this helpful guide for first-timers like you. Keep reading to learn everything you need to know for your first class at DanceWorks Indy (DWI)!

How to sign up

Getting started with us is easy! There are two simple ways you can book your first class:

  1. Momence: Download the “Momence” app from your phone’s app store. Create a username and password, then click “Book now” on the home screen. Sign up for your class under the “Classes” tab. Once you are at checkout, you will be prompted to purchase a package. For newcomers, we recommend buying the two-week trial package–this offers you two weeks of unlimited dance classes for only $29. Lastly, don’t forget to sign the waiver before completing your transaction!
  2. Danceworksindy.com: Once you’ve created a Momence account, you can also book directly on our website. Go to our class schedule page, find the class you’d like to take, and click “Book now.” Follow the prompts from there.

What to bring

Now that you’re signed up for class, it’s time to pack your dance bag! Here is a list of essentials we recommend bringing:

  • Water: For proper hydration! We also have a water fountain in our building for water bottle refills only.
  • Shoes: Your footwear will depend on the class you’re taking
    • 305 Fitness, Circuit Conditioning, SWERK, or Cardio Hip-Hop: Tennis shoes (these should be different from your street shoes to protect our dance floors)
    • Yoga: Socks or barefoot
    • Ballet: Ballet slippers* or socks
    • Contemporary: Socks, barefoot, or jazz/ballet shoes*
    • Jazz and Musical Theatre: Jazz shoes*, tennis shoes, or socks
    • Heels: Heels you feel comfortable walking in or tennis shoes
    • Tap class: Tap shoes*
    • K-Pop: Tennis shoes

(*Pro Tip: If needing to purchase dance shoes, Discount Dance or Kinney Dancewear offer multiple options at affordable prices.)

  • Accessories: Feel free to bring optional accessories like yoga blocks, therabands, or tennis balls. For classes requiring a yoga mat, don’t forget to bring that along, too.

What to wear

We encourage you to wear something you can comfortably move in–think leggings, bike shorts, tights, leotards, loose pants, gym shorts, tank tops, or T-shirts. We’re not strict, so wear what makes you feel confident and ready to dance!

For your hair, we suggest a style that is clean and out of your face. There are no requirements–just something secure enough to allow you to move.

Where to park

We are located at the heart of downtown Indianapolis with multiple parking options:

  • RJE parking lot: Free on weekdays after 5pm and on weekends.
  • Street parking: Metered parking options are available along E. Ohio St., Market St., and sections of N. East St.
  • Behind the building: Further down Park St., there is free parking directly behind our DWI building.

When you walk in

We ask that all new members arrive at least 15 minutes early. When you get here, head straight to the front desk to check in. One of our front desk staff members will greet you, assist with any questions, give you a quick tour of our space, introduce you to your instructor, and walk you to your dance room. Once you are settled, you will have a few minutes to stretch on your own, connect with fellow dancers, use the restroom, etc., before class officially begins.

What to expect in class

Each class will look different depending on the style, but generally, your instructor will start with a warm welcome and studio announcements. They will introduce themselves and say hello to any new clients (you!). From there, they will begin with a quick warm-up, then proceed with technique, choreography, or exercises. Importantly, you can expect a stress-free environment where you are encouraged to have fun–our mission is dance works for everybody and every body!

After class

You did it! After your class, swing by the front desk again to grab your new client goodie bag. Our team will also check in with you to hear about your experience and help you book your next class (we hope it’s the first of many!).

See you soon!

At DWI, we are beyond excited to welcome you into our community. No matter your background or skill level, we hope your first class is filled with fun and positivity. We can’t wait to dance with you soon!
