FAQs
We are so excited!
Please arrive 15 minutes early to the studio. We’ll give you a tour, introduce you to the instructor, and get you checked in.
We also suggest bringing a water bottle and comfortable clothing.
We suggest athletic or dance clothing with fabrics that stretch, make you feel comfortable, and allow you to move – hopefully, it makes you feel amazing and empowered, too!
We LOVE beginners!
We recommend folks with no dance experience join an Absolute Beginner class, just to get your feet under you, so to speak. We offer weekly drop-in Absolute Beginner level classes on the weekends, typically at 11am.
Use the DanceWorks Indy app for more information on class times, or check out our schedule.
We also run month-long Absolute Beginner progressive workshops in various styles for those who want a more in-depth start.
You are welcome to sign up for Beginner level, from the start, but the class could be more than you expect.
Another great option for those new to dance is to try one of our dance fitness classes, like SWERK, Cardio Hip Hop, or 305 Fitness! These are upbeat cardio dance classes that you follow along with the instructor and are great for building stamina, coordination, and just having a good time. They’re like Zumba …but designed for 2023 with your fav top 40 pop/hip hop tracks and low lighting.
Welcome back to dance!
You’ll find many folks just like yourself here who have danced before but have been on a little hiatus. Typically, you want to attend a Beginner or Beg/Int level class to “shake the dust off” before moving to higher levels.
We do recommend this path if it’s been a few years, just so that you can build back your confidence!
All of our classes are self-placement based, so you’re welcome to try any and all our classes.
We encourage you to do so!
What shoes do I need?
Shoe choice can vary depending on the style of dance. Below is a helpful guide.
For all classes, please bring in a clean, dry pair of shoes with you to change into to keep our floors looking and feeling fabulous!
Tap
We recommend tap shoes, but if you’d like to try out the class in sneakers, socks, or other dance shoes, that is totally fine.
Ballet & PBT
We recommend canvas or leather ballet shoes, but socks work in a pinch as well.
Jazz
Jazz can be done in jazz shoes or socks, although we recommend something with some grip and traction.
Contemporary & Modern
Contemporary and Modern dance classes are typically best in socks.
Heels
We recommend a pair of heels that you feel comfortable walking, standing, pivoting, and moving in. For beginners especially, we recommend something with some ankle support and/or a slightly thicker heel.
All Other Classes
We recommend athletic shoes.
Kinney Dancewear is also a great local retailer of dance shoes and apparel.
