Ballet

Ballet is an artistic dance form performed to music using precise and highly formalized set steps and gestures. Classical ballet, which originated in Renaissance Italy and established its present form during the 19th century, is characterized by light, graceful, and fluid movements.

Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT)

Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT) is a codified class that helps dancers create muscle memory in service of their ballet technique. Every exercise in the PBT repertoire is designed to help develop more coordination and muscular accuracy that translates directly into ballet class. This revolutionary technique from Australia has now become global and taken over the world of ballet training! Come see how this low-impact class can help you grow your ballet technique even more efficiently.

Tap

Tap dance is characterized by using the sounds of tap shoes striking the floor. The sound is made by shoes that have a metal “tap” on the heel and toe. There are several major variations on tap dance including: flamenco, rhythm (jazz) tap, classical tap, Broadway tap, and post-modern tap.

Musical Theatre

Hip Hop

Hip-hop dance refers to street dance styles primarily performed to hip hop music or that have evolved as part of hip hop culture. It includes a wide range of styles. The television show Soul Train and the 1980s films Breakin’, Beat Streat, and Wild Style, showcased dance crews and hip hop dance styles in their early stages, giving hip-hop mainstream exposure. The dance industry responded with a commercial, studio-based version of hip-hop—sometimes called “new style”—and a hip-hop influenced style of jazz dance called “jazz-funk”. Classically trained dancers developed these studio styles in order to create choreography from the hip-hop dances that were performed on the street. Because of this development, hip-hop dance is practiced in both dance studios and outdoor spaces.

Contemporary & Modern

Contemporary dance is a genre of dance that developed during the mid twentieth century and has since grown to become one of the dominant genres for formally trained dancers throughout the world, with particularly strong popularity in the U.S. and Europe. Although originally informed by and borrowing from classical ballet, modern, and jazz, it has since come to incorporate elements from many styles of dance. Contemporary dance ranges from involves large, full-bodied movements to incorporating floor work, to encouraging improvisation and movement exploration.

Modern dance, the predecessor to contemporary dance, typically refers to the codified techniques of Martha Graham, Jose Limon, Lester Horton, Merce Cunningham. Modern is often considered to be a “rebellion” to the more formal dance forms like classical ballet.

Jazz

Jazz dance is very broad style that may refer to vernacular jazz, Broadway jazz, or studio jazz dance. All genres build on the African American vernacular style of dancing that emerged with jazz music. Some popular broadway and theatrical jazz choreographers include Bob Fosse and Gus Giordano. Currently, the term “jazz dance” has been used in ways that have little to do with jazz music, and has developed into a technique that is commonly cultivated by competition dance teams and studios, in which students dance to various forms of pop music.
